Last week, news broke that Russia had seized the assets belonging to the Russian World of Tanks developer, Lesta. At the time, no reason for the action was given, although there was plenty of speculation. Today, there is an update from Russian news outlet RIA Novosti, which reported that the Russian government has accused both Wargaming owner Viktor Kisly and Lesta Games owner Malik Khatazhaev of “extremist activities”.
According to the report, these activities revolve around Wargaming opposing the invasion of Ukraine and engaging in fundraising efforts to support the citizens of the country. Wargaming has opposed the war and done fundraising by selling in-game items to players. They also pulled out of Belarus and Russia completely in 2022, having transferred control of World of Tanks in Russia to Lesta Games.
In fact, the two companies are no longer related, and the war strategy games have diverged from each other since then. Unfortunately, for Lesta, this doesn’t seem to matter much, as their assets are the ones being seized.
