Making money as a developer on Roblox isn't new. You've been able to create your own game and then sell it to others for Robux, the game's virtual currency, for a long time now. While most experiences continue to be free on the game-creating platform, there are quite a few developers that make a fair bit of cash on Roblox.
The "downside" of the system to date is that yes, Robux can be withdrawn from your Roblox account and turned into real life cash, but it was limited to accounts with certain permissions and was done so at an exchange rate determined by Roblox itself.
While that will continue to be an option, at the latest Roblox Developers Conference the team revealed a few new initiatives aimed at getting Roblox to its goal of 1 billion daily active users. One such system being added to PC (consoles later) is the ability to now sell your created games for straight cash. Got a great game going and just want to sell it? You'll be able to on desktop later this year. Titles will sell directly for cash at $9.99, $29.99, or $49.99 with creators netting 50%, 60%, or 70% of the revenue for each price bracket respectively.
In addition to selling games, as the company aims to be responsible for 10% of the globe's gaming revenue, creators will be able to also sell physical goods through Roblox. Have a Shopify store? Push it through Roblox. The platform aims to create multiple entertainment and party systems to expand their audience outside of games and will also, sigh, integrate generative AI in both creation and user experiences.
It's all aimed at "helping our creators succeed," but yeah, it isn't altruistic of course. Roblox makes substantial percentages off of your games and goods for little to no work on their part. Win/Win? I'm not ready to say that just yet. What do you think?
