What happens when you build a game development studio of about 70 people, all working remotely, and pull in veterans from CS:GO, Halo, Overwatch, and other competitive shooters? You get some crazy ideas, I'm sure, but you may just end up with something similar to Spectre Divide, an upcoming 3v3 F2P tactical shooter that the team calls a "love letter to CS:GO with a more intimate 3v3 team."
Mountaintop Studios has ben quietly working away for a few years now behind the scenes on this one. They've even brough in competitive gaming legend shroud as the lead gameplay advisor. He's been playing and advising the team from a streaming and competitive standpoint for 2 years now. One of the videos down below is shroud's and shows off an entire match against the devs if you want to skip right to gameplay.
Yay...another tactical shooter...just with smaller teams, I hear you say.
Ok, let me throw you the team's curveball. Yes, the teams are 3v3, but they are actually kind of 6v6. The game's primary unique sauce is a "Duality" system. You actually control two bodies and you can swap between them at will. You'll have loadouts that cater to this type of dual gameplay, too. Hell, even maps and skills are all built around the Duality system.
Toss out a puck and your spectre spawns there. They'll even warn you if they hear enemies or are in danger. A simple swap to your clone allows for some instant revenge or some top-tier flanking strategies to either place or disarm that pesky bomb.
Spectre Divide adopts a very cel-shaded animation style and an aim-down-sights (ADS) tactical gameplay. Weapons and the world are futuristic and since everyone loves a good fight, "Santai" fights, as matches are called, are a huge source of entertainment. That means that sponsors will want a piece of the action so pick one to determine your skill set, but don't expect any "ultimate" type abilities here. Skill reigns supreme.
Spectre Divide will also feature a "crew" system. Up to 60 players can roll together and accomplish objectives to earn points and climb the leaderboards. The team says this system will be enhanced further at launch, but they want it to create a situation where "every match matters."
No release data has been set for Spectre Divide, but they team is holding a PC stress test starting tomorrow, August 3rd. You can sign up on Steam to try and get access. No streaming or recording though, so if you just want to watch some gameplay, check out the videos below. Being F2P, the team promises plenty of cosmetics for sale to deck your two bodies out in style.
