If you were watching The Game Awards last night, you likely saw a trailer for Duet Night Abyss teasing the free-to-play action RPG’s next update, “The Wind Awakening”, arriving on December 23. I didn’t bother to cover it last night with some of the other games, because I knew a version preview livestream would be taking place today, and more details on the update would be available at that time.
The new update introduces the region of Huaxu, a place where Charons are not treated like outcasts or the scourge of society, but instead are seen positively and respected as “Loongscions” due to their horns. Huaxu is different from Icelake in quite a few ways, one being the fact that it is governed by laws known as “The Nine Chapters of Dafeng” and that all criminal acts are automatically punished by those laws without involvement from mortals. It’s as if a god was watching all the time and just punished people the minute they did something, making the nation free of crime and war.
Of course, that’s not enough to prevent a crisis known as “The Scourge of Zhuyin,” which involves different factions. And the player will be getting caught up in this, whether they want to or not. And this is just my guess, but it seems like Huaxu’s governing system probably has some messed-up repercussions of its own that we’ll discover over time.
The update also includes six new quests that will offer players a deeper look at Huaxu’s culture, and offer opportunities to explore the new region’s map, which will be “considerably larger” than Icelake. The devs showed off a few of the locations that make up the new region in today’s special program. They range from the southern wharf that is the player’s point of entry when visiting the region for the first time to areas infested by filthoids that are still pretty to look at.
The devs also discuss technical changes made to the game’s graphics systems that are intended to make the new region look more realistic. They have been working on the game’s appearance in general. And yes, that means an increase in polygons and improved character appearances.
The Wind Awakening makes some quality-of-life changes for players, such as introducing the ability to adjust the day-night cycle in Huaxu and making all of the new region’s Miswharf another co-op area so players can continue to hang out with their friends. New free postures are being added to the shop as well.
Since we’re heading into a new region, that does mean new characters. When the new update drops, it will introduce six new characters. These include an heiress named Fushu, a swordsman named Kezhou, Zhiliu – the proprietress players met in Duet Night Abyss’ latest event, The Magistrate of Yingtian – Yuming, a martial artist named Su Yi, and finally, players will be able to add the proprietor of the Asphodel Camilla to their roster. Each of these characters is detailed in the video below, along with a rundown on upcoming events.
