Steam Next Fest is returning soon. In fact, it’s only four days away. But that didn’t stop Steam from squeezing in a different kind of fest this week: the Steam Bullet Fest. This one’s for all the Bullet Hell fans out there.
As you’d expect, most of the games participating are buy-to-play games. The point is, after all, to encourage players to buy the game by sharing a demo. But there are some free-to-play games that participate as well. And some of them probably just flew under your radar. So, we’ve selected a few for you to look at. Of course, you can also check out all the offerings on the Bullet Fest page while it’s live.
The list will definitely have a few familiar titles on it. Realm of the Mad God Exalt is at the very top of the list. You won’t see it on our list here, because there’s really no point in telling you about games you already know about. So, this list contains games that have positive reviews from the few players who found the game and left reviews.
In all fairness, it’s a little difficult to tell the actual quality of this game based on reviews alone because it only has 10. But it does have a positive rating based on those reviews, which call the game things like “enjoyable” and “charming”. It’s an 8-bit space shooter with more than 25 playable ships – some of which appear to be less than traditional. Apparently, you can have a duck ship. The game also features more than 75 weapons and five different bosses. All told, you’re looking at a 400 MB download. So, it’s worth giving the game a try.

This bullet hell is pretty minimalist on the graphics. If you’re not a fan of red and black, it’s probably something you should avoid. That aside, Kill the Demon Lord was released late last year, and most of the reviews are pretty positive. There are a few negative ones, but considering one of them was telling players that it might be too difficult for players new to the genre, I think we can give it a pass. It should be noted that the game apparently has some visual novel elements as well.

This little vertical post-apocalyptic shooter launched in January. Players take on the role of a biker armed with a grappling hook. This lets the character move between vehicles and take control of them. The goal is to use the cars to stop Sunset’s home from being demolished. As with the other games on this list, it doesn’t have a lot of reviews, but those who have taken the time to do so seem to be enjoying it.
Of all the games on this list, I’d have to say this one is one of the prettier ones. It’s hand-drawn with HD graphics. It’s also story-focused, with 7 chapters set in the land of Pohjola. There’s even a story mode for those who want to experience that separately. The game also features four difficulty levels ranging from Novice to Brutal.
Also on the artsy side, Infinite Incantation is a paper-craft style game. Players cast spells against waves of enemies. As for progression, it’s dice-based. Players roll dice to evolve their spells. Characters can also be customized using RPG-style upgrades. Once again, the game’s reviews are fairly positive. Those that are negative seem to focus on not liking the randomization of the spell evolutions.
