Riot Games is making changes to Fortnite’s Creator Ecosystem, apparently offering players – and themselves – more ways to make money. According to the announcement on the battle-royale’s site, players or “developers” will be able to earn revenue by selling items directly from their Fortnite islands.
The new system will begin in December, and during the first year, players will be able to make approximately 74% of their in-game sales. Technically, it’s 100% of the V-Bucs value, but after platform and store fees, which vary depending on platform, are factored in, it drops to around the 74% mentioned.
Once the first year is up, the revenue share will drop significantly. Again, technically, it will be a 50% share of the V-Bucks value (which varies), but fees from different platforms will drop that number down to 37% or thereabouts. Still, as is prominently pointed out on the Fortnite site, that’s still more than Roblox’s 25%.
This is just one change to the Creator Ecosystem. Epic Games is also making changes to the payout formula for User Acquisition Rewards, including adjustments to prevent fraud. In addition, Epic will be adding a Sponsored Row in Discover, allowing players to purchase increased visibility for their islands. A portion of the money generated from this will go into the engagement payout pool. For the first year, that portion will be 100%, and on January 1, 2027, it will drop to 50%.
