Data center travel has been available in Final Fantasy XIV for a bit now, and people are definitely taking advantage of it. However, the ability to travel has been restricted to data centers within the same region. Square Enix is planning on expanding on that – at least temporarily.
To prepare for the upcoming launch of the MMORPG's Dawntrail expansion, and whatever server queues we may be in for, the team has decided to test cross-region travel. If successful, this will allow players to select less busy data centers in other regions to play on should their own be overcrowded.
There are concerns about certain things, such as the economy and social norms between data centers. To figure out what issues may occur as a result of cross-regional travel, the XIV team will be running a test period. This will begin on March 24 at 8:00 PM Pacific and last until the beginning of Patch 7.0 maintenance.
During the test, players on the Japanese, North American, and European data centers will be able to travel to the Oceanian data center. The one catch is that players on the Oceanian data center will not be able to travel to any of the others.
Another important thing to note about cross-region travel is that characters may find themselves locked out of their home world due to server congestion. In addition, the use of certain social features will not be reflected on the Lodestone when used during cross-region travel. This includes things like the friend list, blacklist, and linkshells made on the visited server.
