It looks like the console (or well, these days, platform) wars may be coming to an end – at least for fans of Square Enix games. The developer and publisher of the Final Fantasy franchise has announced some big changes following its last financial report. Despite some fairly successful game launches, the company’s profit fell by nearly 16%, resulting in a loss of nearly $52 million.
This is on top of the company recently announcing a $140 million slap recognizing "extraordinary losses" due to the cancellation of a significant number of projects.
We also still haven't heard any recent sales numbers from the company on the recent Final Fantast VII Rebirth leading some to speculate that the game underperformed (just as Final Fantasy XVI missed the "higher" end of expectations.) Both of these are largely attributed to the titles only being available on PS5.
In the wake of this, Square Enix has announced “Square Enix Reboots, and Awakens” – because this company has to be a little extra about everything. Effectively, they will be restructuring the company. Changes are expected for both the European and American offices. The official statement is that the company will “rebuild its overseas business division from the ground up”. The translation is likely that these offices can probably expect some layoffs.
One change that is definitely for the better is that players are going to be finding Square Enix’s games on more platforms. The company will “aggressively pursue a multiplatform strategy” which will reportedly include Nintendo, Xbox, and PC. Of course, PlayStation is a given. The company is also looking to expand its mobile releases to PCs. This is all great news for people who would love to play Square’s games but don’t want to own more than one platform to do it.
Interestingly, it seems that some restructuring was already being done, as in early May it was revealed that Yoshi-P and the division he heads both received title changes. Creative Business Unit 3 will be “Creative Studio 3” and Yoshi-P’s new title is “Studio Head”. We're not sure if this change will be reflected with Dawntrail's launch in Final Fantasy XIV.
