As part of a reorganization process designed around a “hyper-localization” initiative announced earlier this month, Nexon America has laid off what they’re stating is a "small number" of roles. These layoffs follow plans to launch a new Western Development Group in Los Angeles – a group the company is currently hiring for.
According to a statement made by a Nexon America spokesperson to Game Developer, the current job openings are for engineers and designers. The statement didn’t specify what positions were eliminated, but one would hope that if they were the same, the company would have offered current employees the option to transfer rather than being let go.
The restructuring will allow the company to more easily cater to local players in certain markets, a move Nexon is making in a bid to increase revenue by $5.2 billion within the next few years. Nexon also hopes to increase operating income by $1.75 billion in this time. The company’s plans focus not just on existing games like their anime-style MMORPG MapleStory, but new IPs as well.
