The reasons for Overwatch 2 to have been created in place of OG Overwatch continue to dwindle as Blizzard has announced that the Hero Mastery Gauntlet PvE game mode will be going away in the next season.
"Hero Mastery Gauntlet was intended to bring the high score-chasing excitement of Hero Mastery missions into a multiplayer format," community manager Kaedi wrote. "Unfortunately, it hasn’t resonated with players in the ways that we hoped."
The reasons it never resonated with players are plentiful, not least of which is that players never asked for a repetitive turret defense mode that had no progression system and nothing to do with the story of Overwatch 2. I'm sure there are two of you out there who are going to miss the game mode, and for that I'm sorry, but you're the only ones playing it.
There are still a small handful of story missions in the game, something the players actually did ask for (well, sort of), but it looks like no more will be coming after the Activision Blizzard layoffs a couple of months ago gutted the Overwatch 2 PvE team. The PvE story missions players ended up getting were, of course, not even close to the story progression system we were told was coming to the shooter pre-launch.
This continues to raise the question of why Overwatch 2 was even needed as a sequel since story-relevant PvE content that was promised before the game's launch never came to fruition, and likely never will.
If you ever get bored, go read the reviews for Overwatch 2 on Steam. They are comedy gold. Oh, and OW2 still remains at "Overwhelmingly Negative" on Steam.
