It’s a little funny to me that I’d never considered a Fortnite x Overwatch crossover before. I suppose I just got used to things like the music concerts and Doctor Who landing on the island. I was so used to the silliness that a collab with Blizzard’s free-to-play team shooter didn’t even occur to me.
And yet, here we are. Between now and June 4, Overwatch is invading Fortnite. And it seems it’s more than just skins and other cool cosmetics. According to the post on Blizzard’s site, Fortnite players will be getting a taste of Overwatch’s gameplay as well, with things such as Payload pushes, healing beams, and Blink fights. The crossover will also bring Overwatch locations like Busan Sanctuary and Hanamura Courtyard, among others, to the island.
Players will actually be able to meet Tracer and Mercy in these areas. Both have brought along their weapons for players to use. Tracer’s Pulse Pistols will put players in first-person, allow them to Blink across short distances, and even use Recall to rewind time a bit. Mercy’s Caduceus Staff will allow players to keep a teammate alive using a healing beam. Players with the staff equipped will also be able to glide through the air.
Meanwhile, Genji and D.Va will be recruitable allies. Players will have to seek them out, however. They’re not just going to show up and offer their assistance.
As players fight across the island during this crossover, they’ll unlock new gameplay modes and rewards. Gameplay includes things like the Payload Rift Anomaly, while rewards consist of chests, sprays, and more.
