In about 4 weeks, the Path of Exile 2 is going to host the "biggest reveal" stream for their upcoming ARPG. If you're a bit confused by that, because the game should have been in early access by then, yeah, you aren't alone.
Path of Exile 2 was originally targeting a November 15th early access launch, but that's now been delayed by three weeks. The new "magic" date is December 6th.
In a video explaining the delay to fans, Game Director Jonathan Rogers explains that the game itself could totally hit the team's original early access date. The backend databases, however, just aren't in good enough shape to make the transition in the timeline Rogers originally envisioned. Rogers takes full responsibility for this delay and the decisions leading to it in his message saying "This one is totally on me. I just didn't leave enough time to make sure we could get it done."
The "it" Rogers is talking about is making sure that the original Path of Exile databases are merged into the new Path of Exile 2 databases safely. This merge needs to happen to allow account cosmetic and microtransaction-purchased items to be shared across the two games. This requires some server architecture updates the team wasn't prepared for given the age (and maybe the data integrity issues) present in the original game's older databases.
We're sure it isn't the news some wanted and if you took time off for early access, Rogers apologizes for that, too.
