Somewhere between 300 and 400 employees have been laid off at EA, according to reports. Of those laid off, approximately 100 were staff of Apex Legends developer Respawn, consisting of publishing staff, developers, and QA staff.
In addition to the layoffs, Respawn announced via Twitter that two games in “early-stage incubation” have been canceled. One of these was what would have been a new Titanfall game. The announcement also goes on to state that the developer is making “targeted team adjustments” for the F2P shooter Apex Legends and Star Wars Jedi.
Back in the October earnings call, EA CEO Andrew Wilson noted that “large systematic change” would be required for Apex Legends to bring in the kind of money EA was hoping for. He was fairly vague about what this meant, other than stating that the company had no intention of making a 2.0 and splitting the player base. Although not mentioned, it seems likely that progress on these changes may have been a factor in recent decisions.
