At the beginning of the month I wrote about Riders of Icarus and the "play-to-earn" MMORPG's plans to merge all their servers down to two NA and two EU servers. Mergers that were originally announced a month in advance. When I updated the piece that piece the very next day to report that the mergers were canceled, I pointed out that this was extremely weird given that the reason for the mergers and the reason for the cancellation of mergers were the same: "to ensure the best possible gameplay experience."
At the time, I thought to myself, "this game is going away soon."
Yes. It is. VALOFE is closing Riders oof Icarus down on May 15th. Sales will be halted tomorrow, February 13th. The announcement includes multiple events running up through the shutdown and an additional FAQ that really doesn't provide too many additional details is available on the game's site. The only refunds being offered are the ones the game HAS to provide under Steam's guidelines. If you've been "playing to earn," it looks like you'll be cashing out with losses at this point.
As if this wasn't weird enough, there's an additional announcement that was posted at the same damn time as the game's closure announcement. Care to guess what it is for? It's the reveal of the MagmaPora Part 2 update. There's even a damn trailer! I added it below. The update will drop, get this, on April 10th. That's just a tad over 1 month before shutdown.
How bizarre.
