Four months ago, we had an article on this site asking if TenCent and Level Infinite’s free-to-play MMORPG Tarisland was unofficially dead. It had been some time since we’d really heard anything from them, and it’s likely a lot of other people were wondering the same thing. Well, the answer is, “We guess so?” But if it was unofficial before, it’s about to be official now.
For the first time in seven months, there is an update on the game’s site, and it’s not a happy one – especially not for whoever was still playing the game. Come November, the game will be officially terminated.
According to the post on the site, the game’s end is scheduled for November 4. Of course, that will vary a bit based on your time zone. As is typically the case with these kinds of things, players will be allowed to play the game and use any items they’ve already purchased between now and the game’s official sign-off. That said, as of today, registration and purchases are no longer available. Nor is the ability to download the game.
The announcement also includes some legal statements about data retention, player rights regarding their personal information, and how players can contact the team if they have any questions or complaints. It’s all the standard stuff.
It’s always sad to see a game close. I know that even games that don’t have a lot of players at least have some that truly enjoy it. That said, I can’t really say this wasn’t expected. This game ended up with the reputation of being the “replacement for WoW in China”. That’s never a good way for an MMO to start off its life.
