Earlier this year the team behind The Elder Scrolls Online headed to Amsterdam to kick off the MMORPG's 10th Anniversary Celebration with a live event. Plans were made to host a number of smaller community events throughout the world and then cap it all off with another global event in the US in the Summer of 2025.
Whelp...if you , like me, were eager for that live event, it's time to be disappointed. Today, The Elder Scrolls Online took to X to announce that plans for the US live event have been canceled.
Talk about a "why can't we have nice things" moment.
The team plans to continue to hold smaller meetups and in-game events, and will offer rewards as part of the continuing 10th anniversary, but the big celebration meeting is off the books. The statement reads, in part, "...we will no longer be hosting an additional large-scale in-person even in North America. This was a difficult decision to make - we love hanging with the ESO family! - and we plan to continue holding smaller gatherings in various global locations, including meetups at industry events."
What the statement doesn't say is exactly why this event was shuttered.
Without some other reason described, I can only guess that this was a financial decision. Either the money to host the event isn't there or the company doesn't want to spend money on an event that isn't a revenue driver. That's obviously speculation on my part, but I would really need to see compelling evidence to suggest some other, non-financial reason.
I just hate the feeling that this is yet another event that's being cut because building customer goodwill just isn't enough if you can't up the bottom line at the same time...and hosting the overseas event and then NOT hosting your own home country event seems REALLY weird to me.
Sad to see.
