A little over two weeks ago, The Elder Scrolls Online developers decided to turn off the ability to gift items from the MMORPG’s crown store. The decision, which Magicman covered at the time, was a response to RMT transactions that go against the game’s terms of service. The initial post stated that the team would be exploring options that would allow them to bring gifting back, but that hasn’t happened yet.
As you might imagine, players weren’t pleased. Crown Store gifting is a big part of how the game’s community operates. It’s used by guilds and content creators for various activities. And, of course, sometimes players just like giving their friends stuff.
Today, Studio Director Matt Firor published a post on the game’s forums updating players on the decision. The TL;DR is basically that nothing has changed. As someone pointed out on Twitter, it was less of an update than a reiteration of what had already been done, albeit it in slightly more detail.
The post does acknowledge that the developers “know that [players] are frustrated with us [the developers]." It also notes that those who are doing “normal” gifting are some of the game’s most dedicated players, but goes on to state that disabling the feature was just the fastest way to deal with the current issues.
Finally, the post states that they’re “working on a solution”, but can’t go into details yet. All said, they hope to have it back sometime soon.
