It's the message you never want to hear coming from your favorite under-development MMO. "We're out of money". That's the message Project Gorgon had to deliver to its fanbase back in November.
Since then, however, the Project: Gorgon player base has rallied to raise funds for the still under development MMORPG. It's not enough to keep the game going indefinitely, but it's enough to buy the game a few more months to figure out what to do next.
The players and fans of Project: Gorgon have raised some $30,000 so far to help out the company. They did it in order to help support the game and the very small team of developers, one of whom was diagnosed with Stage 4 cancer last year, which has wiped the savings of the main two developers on the project.
It's not exactly a happy ending just yet, but the money raised is a positive chapter in the story of Project: Gorgon. Game Lead Eric Heimburg tells YouTuber MarleMMO (thanks for emailing us, Marle!) that the funds raised have bought them a few more months to figure out what to do next.
During that interview, Eric also mentioned offering a lower price point for entry into the game, with an offering somewhere around $15 that would give players one character slot and access to the Project: Gorgon. The current price on Steam is $39.99, so a lower price point option could be a viable strategy for the game.
According to the Steam Early Access page, Project: Gorgon is quite playable, there are just many more features and content additions the devs would like to make before calling the game feature complete. There are over 100 skills, thousands of items, and dozens of dungeons with content up to level 80.
Thanks to MarleMMO for bringing all of this to our attention, and for the fantastic interview he has posted on his YouTube channel with Eric. It's an insightful look into the development process and what it takes to bring an MMORPG to life. Check out the full interview in the video below.
