AI War 2 is a grand strategy and real-time strategy hybrid developed and published by Arcen Games that reverses many conventions of its genre. Released on October 21, 2019, this indie sci-fi simulation features single-player and co-op modes alongside multiplayer capabilities. The game presents a scenario where the player has already lost the war and must start with one small planet in a galaxy dominated by hostile factions, mostly the AI. Success requires taking territory without attracting attention while building an empire carefully enough to run fleets and defensive networks. Players must adapt to an ever-evolving galactic battleground as the artificial intelligence becomes more devious every year since 2018. The simulation runs on the Unity 3D engine and utilizes modern multi-core processors to handle massive amounts of AI and simulations in a massively parallel fashion. While multiplayer currently remains in beta, the system is designed to be self-repairing, which benefits players using different operating systems or hardware configurations. Technical advancements allow framerate to be decoupled from simulation performance, enabling smooth gameplay even during heavy battles with many units on screen. Users can speed up or slow down the simulation without extra CPU load and pause at will to manage their time effectively. The game includes over 1900 lines of spoken dialogue from more than 25 actors, accompanied by a score that combines original tracks with 1.5 hours of new music. Mod support is heavily embraced, with multiplayer-safe mods available and many player-supported versions shipped directly with the game. The redesign of the user interface provides a ton of information and power right when players need it during intense moments of gameplay. There are more optional factions than before, each possessing their own goals and strategies that create a living galaxy for exploration. The fleets system offers tons of ships that can be organized and distributed with minimal fuss to suit various tactical needs. Map types vary significantly with lots of sub-options available to make them even more diverse across different campaigns. Sub-fleets such as the Warden, Hunter, and Praetorian Guard provide new challenges in how both the player and the AI interact with each other. Outguard can be hired to deploy surprise mobile forces whenever necessary, while many factions remain open for alliance. The game offers a choice between an accessible approach or an extreme challenge mode that introduces elements of permanent loss and disadvantageous positions.
