Arcade Paradise is an indie simulation and adventure title developed by Nosebleed Interactive and published by Wired Productions, released on August 10, 2022. Players assume the role of Ashley, who inherits a family laundromat and decides to transform it into an arcade instead of continuing with laundry chores. The experience is built around a collection of over 35 playable arcade games that span three decades of gaming history, from early vector titles to the 32-bit era. Each machine includes its own gameplay mechanics, stories, missions, and high score systems for players to set and upload to online leaderboards. You can manage your business by investing profits in new machines while staying one step ahead of your father, Gerald, who appears via phone calls from the Riviera. The setting recreates the look and feel of 1990s arcades, complete with a soundtrack inspired by records from that early 90s cassette collection era. The main story runs for approximately 24 hours, while including extras extends playtime to around 29 hours. A completionist approach to the game requires about 38 hours to finish all available content and challenges.

What a thing. Arcade Paradise made me think of Outrun and GTA and Mr Driller, and also my own working life in my teens as a dishwasher and a double-glazing salesperson, sure. But it also made me think of those mazes tiled on the walls of Warren Street tube. Warren Street! Get it? Little puzzles made to be solved between trains, but tricky enough to encourage you to miss your train in the first place. Then you solve the maze and you're off into a wider maze of the underground network. And maybe, who knows, there's a maze beyond that too.
