About
Arma: Cold War Assault is a tactical action shooter developed and published by Bohemia Interactive, originally released on August 29, 2001. This title serves as the debut game for the studio and was initially published by Codemasters under the name Operation Flashpoint. The software has since been modernized with native 64-bit Windows support to accommodate ultrawide and high-refresh displays. It now includes full controller support alongside a modern audio and networking stack that replaces the retired GameSpy service. The game runs on an open-source engine released under the GNU GPL v3.0-or-later license, allowing users to study or modify the code. While the engine source is available for anyone to build or port, game data and assets remain under the Arma Public License Share Alike. Players can access a full engine source code repository on GitHub by searching for BohemiaInteractive/cwr. An in-game mod manager enables users to browse and download community content directly without needing command-line tools. The narrative focuses on clashes over the Malden Islands where the protagonist, Victor Troska, returns to Nogovo only to face returning military threats. The storyline spans from dusk to dawn as players must utilize every resource in their arsenal to hold back incoming forces. This version includes both the original campaign and its expansion, Resistance, which adds new vehicles, weapons, and detailed urban environments. The available content covers a main story length of 23 hours and can extend to 62 hours for completionists seeking all objectives. Combat takes place across vast battlezones measuring 100km² in size, featuring over 40 authentic vehicles and aircraft for command. The single-player experience allows players to lead fully equipped troops through missions set in a new island environment called Nogova. Multiplayer functionality is restricted to local area network connections rather than internet play. The rendering has been updated with an OpenGL 3.3 backend that supports crisp scalable fonts and selectable refresh rates.
