Black The Fall is an action, indie, and adventure title published by Square Enix and developed by Sand Sailor Studio. Released on July 11, 2017, this single-player experience follows an old machinist who has spent decades working before planning his escape from a Communist regime. His journey involves navigating hidden passages while dealing with shadow and grief. To succeed in his mission, he must rely on ingenuity, reflexes, and deception. The player can harness the power of a stolen designator tool to manipulate both people and machines throughout the game. Along the way, the protagonist befriends an abandoned robot that becomes a loyal companion. Together they attempt to solve puzzles buried within the oppressive atmosphere of a dystopian dictatorship. The narrative is inspired by real-world events and focuses on overthrowing a Communist State. The main story takes approximately three hours to complete. Adding extras extends the playtime to about four hours total. A completionist run also requires around four hours to finish all available content.

Though Black deserves credit for adding new puzzle mechanics along the way, it could've easily seen its 6-8 hour runtime chopped in half and still gotten its message across. That entire time I found myself wondering if, like Inside, Black would have anything to say. When I finally discovered its message at the end of the campaign, it did inspire me to look up the real-life issue it was drawing attention to and learn more about it. I applaud it for that. Sure, it could've done so with a bit more subtlety – it's a bit heavy-handed at the very end – but at least Black does have a point to make. It's just a shame that it wrapped that in a game that's so shamelessly and distractingly derivative.
