About
Cairn is an indie survival-climbing title developed and published by The Game Bakers, set for release on January 28, 2026. Players take on the role of pro climber Aava as she attempts to reach a summit that has never been climbed before. This game belongs to the sports, action, adventure, and simulation genres while offering a single-player experience with controller support. The setting is unforgiving Mount Kami, where you must manage pitons and resources to survive the harsh environment. The core gameplay focuses on a realistic climbing simulation that allows for intuitive movement across the rock face. You can find the best holds and place your hands and feet seamlessly using simple controls while adapting your posture, effort, and balance. If you fail to maintain these factors carefully, you will fall from the wall. The game lets you climb anywhere by exploring the mountain and reading the rock face from the ground to plan your route. Throughout the ascent, you will meet unexpected companions and hear stories from those left on the ground below. You can discover the mountain's history and decide what Aava is willing to sacrifice to achieve her dream of the lifetime ascent. Solving problems while on the wall helps you navigate difficult sections as you open your own route up the mountain.

A brilliant climbing adventure that siphons the rage out of navigation puzzlers like Death Stranding and Baby Steps, resulting in something prickly, but warmly approachable.

Cairn would mean nothing without the journey, and like both the mountain you are challenging and the climb itself, it is an incredible one.

When all its merits were added together, I was constantly drawn back to the climb to see the next vista. Cairn is challenging as a game and as a story; because, and not despite its many differences from other games you’ll play this year, it deserves your time and attention.

Maybe it was just the entrancing physicality of Cairn's central climbing and survival mechanics. But at some point, whatever wall existed between myself and the game came down and I was there with Aava and she was with me.
