Developed by Gaming Minds Studios, the game places players in the year 1050 AD at the start of the High Middle Ages. You begin as the leader of a small settlement within a vast world extending from Scandinavia and North Africa to Portugal and the Middle East. The gameplay focuses on construction, research, expansion, and conquest while managing a growing population across the continent. Players can engage in single-player campaigns featuring elaborately designed cut-scenes or test their skills in multiplayer modes supporting up to eight participants. The core loop involves exploring over 30 million square kilometres, founding new cities, and establishing vast trading routes to gather resources. You must protect these trade routes against barbarian attacks and foreign powers until your nation is powerful enough for conquest. Managing an economy requires producing and trading twenty different goods such as coal, fruits, and pottery to satisfy citizen and soldier demands. Technological progress is tracked through fifty major advancements of the Middle Ages, including the three-field crop rotation, the low warp loom, and the longbow. Your kingdom must also withstand devastating natural disasters like storms, fires, volcanoes, droughts, earthquakes, and the Black Death. The main story lasts approximately nine hours, while completing all content takes around twenty-eight hours. Including extras extends the total playtime to fourteen hours beyond the main narrative.

As time went on, I didn't get the sense that I was becoming better at the game so much as I was smashing my head into walls until they relented. And that's a shame because Grand Ages has so much potential, and it does one thing--trade--really well. But there's nothing to support that core, and the more you play, the more you run into roadblocks.
