Grim Dawn is an indie action RPG set in a fantasy world where humanity faces extinction. Iron holds more value than gold, and trust is hard to come by. The game features complex character development, hundreds of unique items, crafting, and quests with meaningful choices that impact the world. Players can combine any of six distinct classes: Soldier, Demolitionist, Occultist, Nightblade, Arcanist, and Shaman. Each class has over 25 skills and modifiers. Hundreds of item skills allow players to further customize their builds. There are hundreds of items categorized as common, magical, rare, epic, and legendary, with over 20,000 possible magical affix combinations and over 200 rare affixes. Quests in Grim Dawn present players with tough decisions that have lasting consequences for the world. Players' actions can determine the fate of individuals, families, and entire villages. There are currently over 35 quests with 75+ lore notes to be collected. Players can interact with various factions, earning favor or becoming enemies. Some neutral factions can be swayed to become allies, but aiding one faction may antagonize another. Hostile factions remember players' actions and will send stronger enemies to hunt them down. Devotion is a unique skill customization system that allows players to acquire bonuses and powerful secondary effects for their class skills. These are unlocked from a constellation map by finding and restoring destroyed or corrupted shrines hidden throughout the world. Players can help human enclaves survive and flourish by securing resources, rebuilding structures, and rescuing survivors who can contribute to the cause. Grim Dawn offers four-person multiplayer, allowing players to team up with friends or make new allies. Multiplayer encounters present a significant challenge that requires teamwork. The combat is fast-paced and visceral, featuring enemy blood splatter, ragdoll physics, and satisfying death effects. Players can rotate the camera for optimal viewing angles, though levels are designed to be playable without rotating it. The world of Grim Dawn is filled with secrets and perils. There are over 200 unique enemy heroes and bosses, each with their own deadly skills. Over 20 secret areas are hidden behind crumbling walls, gaps, and locked doors. Players can explore these areas by exploding obstacles or repairing structures to open new paths. Rogue-like dungeons offer a challenging experience where enemy levels increase as players progress and teleportation is disabled. The world features dynamic weather with region-specific climates and various effects, from sunny days to thunderstorms. Wind gusts affect objects like windmills and sway grass. Players can engage in recipe-based crafting, combining salvaged components into unique items. Higher-tiered recipes allow for the creation of powerful items. The ability to reclaim skill points allows players to adjust their builds without being permanently locked into early choices.
