Growing Up is an indie visual novel and RPG developed and published by Vile Monarch, released on October 13, 2021. This single-player adventure simulation allows you to manage your daily schedule while exploring a city with more than 30 locations. You will learn new skills, participate in various activities, and develop your mind throughout the experience. The game features a variety of systems where you can build your aptitude through handcrafted mini-games and challenging exams. The setting is designed to feel like the 1990s, featuring lavishly handcrafted scenes that reflect an era of rapid social change and pop culture. You can visit the cinema to watch "Dino Park" or buy tapes from a street shop while taking your time in the environment. The narrative branches based on your choices, offering more than 1000 lines of dialogue for each character and multiple endings. Your decisions dictate the development of the story and echo through the entire journey of your character. You will interact with 19 characters whose stories unfold alongside yours as you play, fight, or fall in love during your journey to adulthood. Relationships can be romantic or purely platonic, giving you the choice to forge connections in any way you desire. Upon reaching adulthood, your future career and romantic partner are revealed before you continue the family legacy by having a child. You then experience the life of that child as the cycle begins anew with brand new adventures. The game offers more than 200 skills to acquire, allowing you to shape the future of your character toward one of 42 unique careers. Some careers are easy to obtain while others require significant effort, ranging from becoming an Astronaut to serving as President of the United States of America. You can customize your character with a wide range of items including clothing and hairstyles that affect your room appearance. Unlocking new locations, characters, and certain features depends on the choices you make regarding your offspring. The main story length is approximately 4 hours, while the main story plus extras takes about 9 hours to complete. A completionist playthrough requires roughly 23 hours to finish all available content. The project was created by an all-star team including creative director Daniel Sadowski and art director Gracjana Zielińska among others.
