About
Highway Blossoms is an indie visual novel developed and published by Studio Élan, released on June 16, 2016. This single-player simulation title falls within the casual genre and takes place in the American Southwest. The narrative begins when a journal from an old gold rush miner is found, claiming to show where he hid parts of his stash. This discovery sparks a nationwide craze as would-be prospectors attempt to solve the clues and strike it rich. The protagonist, Amber, inherits a motorhome and wanders the desert while mourning her grandfather. She remains indifferent to the hunt happening around her until she meets Marina, a young hitchhiker lost in New Mexico. The two girls eventually get swept up in the rush together. Their journey unfolds across grand, hand-painted vistas of actual landmarks in the western United States. These scenes are rendered in glorious 1080p detail throughout the game. The audio experience features a huge soundtrack by Smoke Thief, Jake Abernathie, Able Kirby, and other friends of AlienWorks. The music sounds right at home on an in-dash cassette tape player. Players can expect around 6 hours of reading for the main story, which totals approximately 90,000 words. Adding extras extends the playtime to about 8 hours, while a completionist run takes roughly 12 hours. Accessibility options allow users to skip through content in less than five minutes if desired. The developer also included alternate silly content for second readthroughs that may or may not have been a good idea.
