INCISION is an action indie combat title developed by SmoothBrainDev and published by Hyperstrange, released on September 16, 2022. This single-player game draws inspiration from classic first-person shooters like Doom, Quake, Blood, and Shadow Warrior to create a fast-paced experience. Players must focus their skills to stop the spread of the Growth while navigating a world where mercy is weakness and hesitation leads to death. The gameplay rewards intense carnage that paints the town red as long as enemies do not strike first. The game features a varied arsenal including ten weapons of mass-slaughter, each with powerful alternative firing modes. You can fire bouncing incendiary bombs from your shotgun or lob grenades from a heavy machine gun to turn foes into red mist. A trusty revolver allows for tricks that maximize damage output, while four incendiary rockets can cause even strong enemies to crumble into ashes. Additional tools include a saw-spear that functions as both a long-range slashing weapon and a close-range buzzsaw. Movement in INCISION is fast and responsive, allowing players to navigate a living nightmare of flesh and machine. The setting consists of hellish, rusty, pulsating factories that serve as the nerves and organs for a greater being seeking to merge all life. Enemies include augmented soldiers with burst-firing energy rifles, mad sycophants wielding ricocheting sawblades, and machine spider-priests known as Spiderpopes. Ancient things from beyond our world also appear in this roster of monsters designed to keep players on their toes until the bloody end. The game uses an old-school extra lives system with 1-ups scattered across the map to help avoid death. Players must hunt down these lives because running out causes the level to restart without checkpoints or quicksaves. Each level must be beaten in one go, challenging users to learn and adapt their reflexes and aim. The main story length is approximately six hours, while there are no separate times listed for extras or completionist runs. The soundtrack by Frédérick Chicoine provides an entire album's worth of atmospheric horror ambience and mayhem-inducing metal.
