About
Mages of Mystralia is an indie action-adventure fantasy title developed and published by Borealys Games, released on May 17, 2017. This single-player experience features a main story that takes approximately eight hours to complete, with the full content extending to eleven hours when extras are included. Players aiming for a completionist run can expect to spend fourteen hours exploring the game's distinct regions. The narrative is set in the kingdom of Mystralia and was written by bestselling author Ed Greenwood, who also created the Forgotten Realms fantasy world used in games like Baldur's Gate and Neverwinter Nights. The gameplay focuses on designing spells to fight enemies, solve environmental puzzles, and battle epic bosses within a classic action-adventure framework. You play as Zia, a young girl who discovers an innate sense of magic despite it being banned in her society. She leaves home to train independently and gain control over her powers while meeting other exiled mages along the way. During her journey, she finds runes with magical properties that can be combined in millions of different ways to create completely new spells. The experience involves facing giant creatures, navigating dangerous terrain, solving difficult puzzles, and overcoming obstacles placed by antagonists who wish to stop your success. The audio presentation includes an original orchestral score conducted by Shota Nakama and performed by the Video Game Orchestra at SoundtRec Boston, known for its work on Final Fantasy XV and Kingdom Hearts. The game presents a world where intelligence is more valuable than physical strength, requiring players to use their wits against powerful foes and tricky environments. Throughout the adventure, Zia learns to manipulate magic through rune combinations while progressing through over a dozen unique areas filled with challenges.

The basic hack-and-slash action is simple enough to get the job done, but reconfiguring your spells to overcome each puzzle and combat challenge is consistently rewarding

Mages of Mystralia has charm and a lot of heart, but it falls a bit short of delivering a memorable adventure.
