What is Marathon?
Marathon is an action video game developed and published by Bungie. It will be released on March 5, 2026. Players take on the role of a bio-cybernetic Runner in a PvPvE survival extraction FPS set on Tau Ceti IV, a derelict colony. The game features both multiplayer and single-player modes.
In Marathon, players explore zones filled with rival Runners, hostile UESC security forces, and unpredictable environments. Players can scavenge for valuables either alone or as part of a crew. Exploration often transitions into fast-paced PvP combat where gunplay is responsive, supplies are limited, and preparation is key to success. Players can exfiltrate to advance their seasonal power, earn cosmetics based on achievements, and assemble stronger builds using stolen loot. Players then put their gear back on the line in subsequent runs to seek even greater fortunes.

Even those frustrating losing streaks often just have me jumping back into another match, eager to replace the gear I've lost, and most battles are fun, tense, and tactical, pushing you to play smartly and work together with your teammates. How the developers support Marathon over the long term will determine whether it can sustain interest the way other successful live-service games have, but Bungie's fundamentals are incredibly strong, and Marathon is much richer and deeper than its 20-minute matches would suggest. Tau Ceti IV calls, and there are runs to complete.
