About
9 Years of Shadows is an indie action adventure developed by Halberd Studios and published by Freedom Games. The game was released on March 27, 2023, as a single-player experience. A fateful night involving ancient magic changed the life of a young child and altered everything mankind knew. For nine years, the world has been submerged in shadows that rob objects and creatures of their color, joy, and hope. The main story takes approximately six hours to complete, while including extras extends playtime to eight hours. Completionist runs can take up to nine hours depending on how thoroughly players explore the map. Europa, a brave warrior armed with a halberd, enters Talos Castle to find the source of the corruption. Many brave souls have tried to venture inside this long-abandoned orphanage but failed until Europa succeeded. Players can enhance battle prowess by acquiring elemental armors made of lightning, water, earth, and fire. These elements allow for dynamic map travel, surprise attacks on bosses, and strong combos during combat. Apino, a cute magical bear, assists Europa by healing allies, cleansing corruption, and shooting projectiles at enemies. This companion can also open locked doors and shield Europa from ranged attacks during dangerous encounters. Special abilities enable characters to swim against waterfalls, travel through underground tunnels, or glide through warm air currents. These mechanics help access hidden locations and uncover their secrets within the castle environment. Enigmatic composers aid the mission, including special appearances by Michiru Yamane and Norihiko Hibino as NPCs. Several tracks are tuned to 432hz, a soothing frequency known for healing music properties in the game. Hidden bosses with musical attack patterns lurk in the shadows ready to strike players who approach them. Collecting musical notes allows players to perform a healing lullaby to restore health during gameplay. Music serves as the binding thread that connects gameplay mechanics with the storytelling elements of the adventure. The narrative follows Europa's quest to return color to the lands before it is too late.
