About
Ashen is an action RPG developed by A44 and published by Annapurna Interactive, released on December 8, 2019. The game falls into the fantasy adventure genre and features an open world setting for players to explore. It supports both single-player and co-op modes, allowing users to experience the story alone or with others. The narrative follows a wanderer who is searching for a place to call home within this vast environment. Players can choose to fight alongside other adventurers, invite them into their party, or simply ignore them as they pass by. This passive multiplayer system means encounters with other players are optional and depend on individual choices during the journey. Combat in Ashen relies on stamina-based mechanics typical of the souls genre, offering a punishing yet satisfying experience. The world is designed so that location matters greatly, as exploring bogs, investigating fjords, or pillaging palaces changes the adventure's course. A main story run takes approximately 16 hours to complete, while including extras extends playtime to about 21 hours. For those aiming for full completion, the game offers around 26 hours of gameplay.

A moody, well-wrought action role-player with striking, desolate landscapes and a couple of great dungeons.

Ashen's handful of new ideas make it a stellar Souls-like with solid combat, a great art style, and an interesting world.

Ashen's slant on the Soulslike subgenre isn't revolutionary, but is a wonderful example of the familiar formula executed well. It's thoughtful, gorgeous, challenging and a dream to explore.

Collecting souls is as nerve-wracking and rewarding as ever, but the real joy Ashen brings to this deadly dance is sharing those memories with strangers
