About
Hard West is a tactical RPG developed by CreativeForge Games and published by Good Shepherd Entertainment, released on November 18, 2015. The game offers a single-player experience set in a version of the Wild West where Western legends meet demons, arcane rituals, and satanic cults. Players follow Warren as he descends into supernatural chaos and revenge after a tragic event sets him on a path to hunt down those who wronged him. This narrative features hard choices with severe consequences, where death is a constant presence and pacts made with forces beyond human comprehension haunt everyone involved. The story unfolds across 8 unique scenarios that lead to multiple endings depending on the decisions made during gameplay. Combat in Hard West takes place in turn-based encounters where players control one to four squad members on original tactical maps. The system incorporates luck as a guardian of combat rather than relying solely on pure probability, adding depth to challenges. An extensive cover system allows players to create effective positions from objects in the environment, making flanking and maneuvering powerful tactics. Additionally, mechanics like shadow spotting let players locate enemies by their shadows cast by the sun, while ricochet rules allow shots to travel beyond line of sight using metal objects. The game includes more than 40 individually designed turn-based combat missions featuring an eclectic collection of historically inspired weapons such as shotguns, rifles, pistols, and sniper rifles. Players can collect and combine special abilities earned through main objectives, optional tasks, exploration, bartering, and treasure hunting to create powerful combos. These abilities range from feats of gunslinging to survivability against all odds, providing diversified planning options for battles. The playable cast is colorful, with character fates intimately intertwined with the player's journey as they unravel a deep storyline. The main story length is approximately 12 hours, while completing the main story plus extra content takes about 22 hours. For players aiming to see everything, the completionist run extends to roughly 29 hours. Throughout these sessions, players make divisive choices that resonate through future events and change the ultimate fates of a group of characters. The world allows for exploration where players can uncover the plans of ancient powers while navigating a setting full of hard choices.

Hard West Critic Reviews and Review Scores
IGNVince Ingenito
7
Hard West isn't the deepest game of its kind, but it does a good job of walking the line between cold, hard tactics, and Weird West-style personality. Its mystically-inspired abilities add a fun twist to the X-Com formula, even if they do remove some of the need for tactical forsight. A richer world outside of combat would have been nice, but as is, Hard West still presents a fun, unique take on turn-based tactics.
EurogamerJohnny Chiodini
Rough round the edges and clunky in parts, Hard West's refreshing take on turn-based strategy is still worth saddling up for.

The presentation is aced, but Hard West's turn-based combat is too rote to be engrossing.

Hard West is a satisfyingly creepy mash-up of six-gun horror and tactical combat.
