About
Heaven's Vault, developed and published by inkle Ltd, is an indie adventure game set in a science fiction universe. Released on April 15, 2019, the single-player experience follows Aliya Elasra, an archaeologist who travels through the Nebula with her robot companion Six. Her journey begins when a roboticist from the University of Iox disappears, prompting Aliya to investigate and uncover secrets about the long-forgotten past. This trail of discoveries eventually leads her to the very edge of her world and toward the ancient secret known as Heaven's Vault. Players can sail through an open world featuring fast-flowing space-rivers, discover lost ruins, and explore ancient sites filled with artifacts. A core mechanic involves finding these artefacts and translating their strange hieroglyphics to piece together the history of the world. The game also focuses on reconstructing an entire ancient language as part of the exploration process. This approach allows players to progress through the story in any order they choose, rather than following a strictly linear path. The narrative is fully adaptive, meaning the game remembers every choice, discovery, and action taken by the player to influence what happens next. Aliya meets a diverse cast of characters who remember everything she says, with their attitudes changing based on how she acts toward them. Some characters are friendly, while others are cautious or out to trick the player, adding complexity to interactions. The story length for the main plot is approximately 16 hours, which extends to 20 hours including extras and reaches 37 hours for a completionist playthrough. Critics have noted that the game world feels well-realized, with curiosity and personality molding the story through the Nebula region. Reviews highlight the title as an ambitious and beautiful experience that conjures a world rich with life. It is recognized as one of the most enthralling narrative-driven adventure games played by many reviewers. The project also received recognition for its storytelling, including a win for Excellence in Narrative at the IGF in 2019 and a BAFTA nomination for Best British Game in 2020.
