About
Kao the Kangaroo is an action adventure platformer and casual game published and developed by Tate Multimedia, released on May 26, 2022. This single-player title supports controller input and features a protagonist named Kao who searches for information regarding his missing father. The game draws inspiration from classic 3D platformers while continuing the character's twenty-one year history. Players can expect a mix of jumping, thumping, puzzle-solving, and collecting activities throughout the experience. The main story takes approximately six hours to complete, with additional content extending playtime to eight hours. Those aiming for full completion will spend about eleven hours exploring all available levels and challenges. During gameplay, Kao traverses diverse interactive environments filled with secrets, enemies, puzzles, and fresh obstacles. He must utilize both learned skills and natural abilities to overcome various difficulties presented at every turn. The cast includes wise mentors, inquisitive inventors, and large antagonists that players may need to defeat. Enemies range from quick strikers and slow brutes to other foes encountered along the path. A key item involves mysterious gloves worn on Kao's paws, which hold power that aids in warding off enemies and moving through the world. These gloves are central to his journey as he seeks to understand their full capabilities. A new downloadable campaign called Bend the Roo'les adds a fresh story involving the Crab King and five extra levels. This content also introduces five playable Eternal cells for players to conquer along with five spooky skins to unlock. The package includes an exclusive art book showcasing locations, characters, and elements found within the game. An original soundtrack composed by Partyk Scelina accompanies the platforming experience.

Kao the Kangaroo makes no secret of its inspirations and while this isn't the toughest platformer going, it's refreshingly straightforward.

I initially thought that Kao the Kangaroo would, at the very least, be a great recommendation for younger players. Then I remembered that I and generations of kids cut their teeth on games like Mario, Crash Bandicoot, or Ratchet & Clank – kid-friendly platformers that still offer plenty of mechanical depth, polish, and design creativity. Children are much more capable than we sometimes give credit for, and Kao’s by-the-numbers design would likely bore all but the most nascent of gamers. Kao the Kangaroo isn’t a total disaster by any means. It just feels aggressively average and forgettable which, sadly, has been the case for the mascot for years.
