The game features a single-player experience set in Metro City where the ancient Egyptian villain Sutekh brings crime to the streets. A superhero capable of melting into the darkness infiltrates this seedy underworld to confront these dark forces. During the day, this crimefighter appears as an ordinary citizen, but at night they adopt a secret identity to hunt villains on midnight streets. The press refers to this individual as Nightshade, and players assume their role directly within the narrative. Players patrol one hundred of the city's darkest corners each night, including locations like King Rat's underground hideout and the League of Unreasonable Gentlemen. These areas contain thieves, muggers, and other alley scum that must be dealt with or destroyed to gather clues. While hunting Sutekh, players face threats such as the human printing press, a closing wall of spikes, deadly jackal pits, and a freeze ray. Overcoming these obstacles requires finding hidden weapons like energy domes, force gloves, and The Staff of Ra. Problem-solving skills are also necessary to outsmart five crime kings who guard the secrets to Sutekh's Lair. The ultimate key to destroying Sutekh is the player's popularity, which serves as a power source for deciphering clues and fighting villains. This resource provides the strength needed to rescue innocent bystanders while maintaining control over the night. If this heroic prowess diminishes, the player can no longer control the night and risks being consumed by it. The game presents its story with 8-bit graphics and a soundtrack in a style similar to point-and-click adventure games. It offers a rich comicbook-like narrative that defines the experience of Nightshade.
