SteamWorld Dig 2 is an indie action adventure and puzzle platformer published by Image and Form on September 21, 2017. This single-player title returns to the series with a mining theme influenced by classic Metroidvania style games. Players dig deep to gain riches while unearthing terrors found in the underworld. The narrative follows a lone steambot and her companion as they investigate mysterious earthquakes striking an old trading town. Exploration takes place in vivid worlds filled with treasure, secrets, and traps located beneath the surface. Combat encounters dangerous enemies throughout the twisted paths of the underground, including shadowy creatures and haunted remains of an ancient electrical threat. Upgrading gear allows players to forge deeper into the earth and face bigger challenges as they progress. Movement options include swinging across large chasms with a Hookshot and flying through caves using a Jet Engine. The main story requires approximately seven hours to complete, while including extras extends playtime to ten hours. A completionist approach to the game takes around thirteen hours to finish all available content. The plot eventually reveals the truth about the player's long lost friend during this underground journey.

SteamWorld Dig 2 retains the original's addictive resource-gathering gameplay, but supplements it with a gorgeously detailed, handcrafted world. Its heady mix of exploration, combat, platforming, and puzzle solving, alongside an expansive set of abilities and mods gives it plenty of variety and a great gameplay rhythm. I wish there was more to do once the campaign ends, but that's a testament to the fact that what is here is just about pitch perfect.
