About
The Vanishing of Ethan Carter is an indie title developed and published by The Astronauts that launched on September 25, 2014. This single-player release falls within the horror, action, and adventure genres while offering a first-person perspective. Players assume the role of Paul Prospero, an occult-minded detective who investigates the mysterious disappearance of Ethan Carter. Upon receiving a disturbing letter regarding the boy's safety, Paul travels to Red Creek Valley to uncover the truth behind the events. The game focuses entirely on exploration and discovery rather than combat or explosions. As players piece together clues about Ethan's fate and the danger facing his family, they navigate a story driven by mystery elements. The experience is designed to be completed in approximately four hours for both the main narrative and any additional content. A separate Unreal Engine 4 remaster known as The Vanishing of Ethan Carter Redux is also available to purchasers of the original title.

The Vanishing of Ethan Carter Critic Reviews and Review Scores

As soon as I finished The Vanishing of Ethan Carter, I started it again and was greeted by that same warning. "This game is a narrative experience that does not hold your hand." Originally I thought it was telling me that I was going to be challenged by what followed and that I shouldn't expect any help in figuring it out. And I still think that. But I also suspect The Vanishing of Ethan Carter, which rarely uses a word more than it has to, is making a broader point when it says it doesn't intend to hold your hand.

A tense and spooky stroll through a gorgeous world, some fun supernatural detective work, and an efficient script with sparse dialogue.
