About
Phoning Home is an action, indie, adventure, and survival title published by ION LANDS and developed by the same studio. The game was released on February 6, 2017, and offers a single-player experience set on a strange alien planet. Players take control of ION, a young exploration unit tasked with securing natural resources before crashing their ship. After the crash leaves the vessel almost destroyed, ION must survive in a dangerous new world while searching for a way to contact home. The journey begins with only the ship's A.I. for company as ION explores this unfamiliar environment. During exploration, the player encounters ANI, a small stranded service unit who identifies as female and admits she is a bit mad. Despite her quirks, ANI becomes a valuable resource essential for any hope of escape from the planet. The two units start an unprepared journey across a landscape where natural laws do not seem to apply. The game features large open environments with realistic effects including time-of-day lighting, forests, snow-covered mountains, volcanoes, canyons, deep oceans, and deserts. Players must survive harsh weather conditions and temperatures while protecting ANI at all costs. Gameplay combines exploration, logic puzzles, and action elements, allowing users to create portals to traverse the terrain or choose to fight and avoid combat. Crafting improvements and critical tools from found resources is a key part of the experience alongside discovering remnants of an alien civilization. Players can decrypt this alien language and restore their technology throughout the adventure. The main story takes approximately seven hours to complete, while including extras extends playtime to twelve hours. A completionist run requires about thirteen hours to finish all available content.
