About
Chained Echoes is a story-driven JRPG developed by Matthias Linda and published by Deck13. The game was released on December 7, 2022, as a single-player title within the indie RPG genre. Players engage in turn-based gameplay set in a fantasy world where dragons and piloted mechanical suits are common sights. The narrative follows a group of heroes traveling across the vast continent of Valandis to end a war between three kingdoms. Their journey takes them through diverse landscapes, including wind-tanned plateaus, exotic archipelagos, sunken cities, and forgotten dungeons. Combat is fast-paced and avoids random encounters, allowing enemies to be seen running around before battle begins. Combat options include using a sword, channeling magic, or boarding a mech for travel and fighting. The world contains tons of items that can be looted, stolen, or crafted within a complex skill and equipment system. Players can also customize their own airship to aid in exploration. The visual style utilizes 16-bit SNES graphics accompanied by music inspired by PSX RPGs. This single-player experience offers between 30 and 40 hours of play time for those focusing on the main story and extras.

Chained Echoes Critic Reviews and Review Scores
Game InformerMatt Miller

While Chained Echoes has the advantage of decades of distance from the games it looks to for inspiration, it’s a better experience in many instances than those vaunted games from which it arose. I prefer this combat, storytelling, and approach to progression and exploration to many of the JRPGs I grew up so enamored with playing. That’s the highest praise I can heap on a game so removed in time from the games to which it might be compared. Whether you currently count yourself a JRPG connoisseur or fondly recall the ʼ90s heyday of the genre, Chained Echoes is well worth your time.
