Everybody's Gone to the Rapture is an indie adventure and casual title developed by The Chinese Room and published by PlayStation PC LLC. This single-player experience was released on April 14, 2016, offering a non-linear narrative set in the village of Yaughton. Players explore a detailed open world where they find toys left in playgrounds and wind blowing quarantine leaflets around a silent churchyard. The setting includes Appleton's farm with untended crops and birds found on the ground while strange voices are heard on radio waves. The game takes place 37 minutes after the world ended, specifically on June 6th, 1984, at 06:37am in Shropshire. A character remains behind to investigate the mystery of the valley as telescopes point toward dead stars and endless darkness. The adventure features a haunting soundtrack that accompanies the exploration of this deep story from an award-winning developer. The main story takes approximately five hours to complete, while including extras extends the playtime to six hours. Those aiming for completion can expect to spend around nine hours finishing all content available in the game.

As the game continues to pull these wonderful tricks of staging, the world of things that The Chinese Room has created settles into a more comfortable balance with the game's other elements, giving ground when needed to the human - and the inhuman - drama that's unfolding. Counter to my own expectations, this is not a particularly complex story to follow, but it is told with a wonderful assurance and a disciplined eye.

Everybody's Gone to the Rapture excels at building a dense world, evocative tone, and rich cast of characters. Its five hours are filled with some really great exploration, discovery, and memorable moments. Piecing together its web of heartbreak, loss, and ultimate revelation provides a great experience. Everybody's Gone to the Rapture rewarded my patience with a fulfilling journey.
