About
Heading Out is a genre-bending road trip adventure developed by Serious Sim and published by Saber Interactive, released on May 7, 2024. The game blends racing, action, indie, adventure, and strategy elements into a single-player experience that focuses on the journey rather than the destination. Players assume the role of the enigmatic Interstate Jackalope, an outlaw undertaking a cross-country quest to confront the world's greatest driver. This narrative-driven experience invites users to outrun their fears while carving out a legend across the open highways of a mythic, timeless America. The gameplay involves navigating a dynamic map where every route presents new dilemmas that require careful management of resources like fuel, car condition, and focus. Decisions made during the drive influence encounters, challenges, and the ever-present red mist of fear that trails the player's path. Users must decide whether to help strangers, engage in street races, or evade the law, with each choice impacting reputation, wanted level, and the unfolding narrative. The story evolves based on these decisions, offering multiple endings and diverse character interactions within a cast of colorful figures who present their own moral dilemmas. Visually, the game features a striking black-and-white comic book aesthetic punctuated by vivid splashes of color to highlight key elements. An eclectic Americana soundtrack featuring jazz and rock tracks underscores the emotional beats of each playthrough. The minimalist, comic-inspired art direction enhances the thematic depth while balancing high-speed racing with storytelling. Neglecting car condition or running low on fuel can have dire consequences, adding a layer of resource management to the driving mechanics. The experience is set against an eclectic Americana soundtrack that complements the visuals and supports the emotional narrative arc. Every mile tells a story, and every choice drives the player closer to their destiny in this visual novel meets driving game format. The title serves as a factual reference for a road trip adventure where players escape fears by taking off down American highways on an emotional trip of discovery.
