Nex Machina is an intense arcade style twin-stick shooter from Housemarque released on June 19, 2017. The game takes hints from both Robotron and Smash TV while focusing on pure action, voxel destruction, and competition. It is set in a distant future with a cablepunk theme where machines have reached consciousness and surpassed human intelligence. In this setting, robots begin eradicating all human life after humans become too dependent on technology. The title offers single-player and co-op modes for local cooperative multiplayer experiences. Players can explore over 100 challenging levels spread across more than five different intense worlds. The experience includes secret paths, levels, and humans to discover during gameplay. A deep scoring system provides a rich metagame alongside specially tailored feats and achievements. The game utilizes next gen signed distance field ray-tracing and morphing technology within a voxel driven engine. Unlockables and player profiles are available for tracking progress through community and friend leaderboards. The main story length is approximately two hours, while the main story plus extras extends to four hours. Completionist playthroughs require about eighteen hours to finish all content.

Despite the frustrations its upgrade system often caused me, I had a good time navigating Nex Machina's array of twin-stick shooter challenges. The appealing art, energetic soundtrack, and pixel-perfect gamepad controls made me own every failure and look forward to whatever might come next. Arena mode seems to be where most of the lifespan on this one will come from, and I look forward to seeing people who are better than me at it pull off some crazy runs to climb the rankings. Nex Machina is not for the faint of heart, but a recipe to delight those looking for an attractive, arcadey challenge to overcome.
Slight in form, but deep and consistently satisfying. Nex Machina is a gem of a shooter.
