About
Sakuna: Of Rice and Ruin is an indie title published by XSEED Games and Marvelous USA, Inc., with development handled by Edelweiss. The game was released on November 10, 2020, and falls within the action, platformer, simulation, and indie genres. Players can experience this single-player adventure where they take on hordes of demons in side-scrolling combat to reclaim a dangerous island. After fighting monsters, the player returns to their village to tend fields full of rice, which serves as the source of Sakuna's power. The narrative follows a spoiled harvest goddess who is banished from her celestial home to an untamed wilderness overrun with creatures. In this forbidding place, she must rediscover her birthright by weathering the elements and cultivating crops alongside her guardian Tama. A group of outcast humans joins these unlikely companions as they work together to tame both the soil and the demons of Hinoe Island. The story combines side-scrolling action with deep crafting mechanics in a tale about finding one's place in the world. The main story takes approximately 30 hours to complete, while including extras extends the playtime to around 35 hours. For players aiming for full completion, the total length reaches about 50 hours. Edelweiss created this entry following their work on the acclaimed Astebreed, blending platforming elements with agricultural simulation.

Combat is fun, and it ties into the simulation elements well. However, the pacing and repetition makes it difficult to fully appreciate it all
