Pyre is a party-based RPG developed and published by Supergiant Games that was released on July 24, 2017. The narrative asks which characters will return to glory and which will remain in exile until the end of their days. The journey takes place across the forsaken land known as the Downside where each victory or defeat brings the exiles closer to enlightenment. For every Rite, players choose three characters from their party and outfit them with mystic Talismans and powerful Masteries. These confrontations are pitched battles against a colorful cast of adversaries in high-stakes scenarios. The interactive narrative ensures that progress is never lost regardless of whether a player prevails or fails. This branching story structure means no two players will experience the journey in quite the same way. The game includes a local two-player Versus Mode where friends can challenge each other or play against a CPU opponent. Players can form a triumvirate from more than 20 unique characters during these fast-paced ritual showdowns. The presentation features vibrant hand-painted artwork and an evocative musical score that draws players into the fantasy world. Controls are accessible and customizable for both gamepad and mouse-and-keyboard setups, with options tailored specifically for PC users. The experience is available in 4K Ultra HD resolution provided a compatible display is used. The challenge scales appropriately for both the campaign and Versus Mode settings. After completing the main story, players can unlock the True Nightwing Campaign Mode to replay the narrative with unique rules. This mode offers higher stakes and greater challenges in an ironman-style run. Players can explore the wide breadth of narrative outcomes by re-playing the story under these new conditions. The main story takes approximately 11 hours to complete, while including extras extends playtime to about 15 hours. A completionist approach to the game requires roughly 21 hours to finish all content.

From the art to the music to the story to the tactical gameplay, and even to how they're all woven together so artfully, Pyre is an adventure that excels in every area of its design other than limiting its multiplayer to local only. It's an epic journey that made me feel thrilled, devastated, and awed, and its tense moments had me tugging my collar both in and out of its fast-paced mystical sports arenas. With an emotionally charged ending that saw so much I'd striven for come to fruition, but was still tinged with tragedy and melancholy even when I did almost everything right, I won't be able to get Pyre out of my head for a long time. This is Supergiant's best work to date, and that's saying something.
