About
Rakuen is an adventure game developed and published by Laura Shigihara that was released on May 10, 2017. The single-player experience follows a hospitalized Boy who travels with his Mom to a fantasy world found in his favorite storybook. His journey begins when he asks the Guardian of the Forest for one wish after requesting an escort from his mother. To receive this wish, the Boy must complete a series of challenges centered on helping his neighbors within the hospital setting. These interactions take place between the patients and their alter-egos living in the fantasy realm. The Boy assists a cranky old man who guards a broken music box while complaining about a lack of visitors. He also supports a young woman in a coma whose husband has remained by her side for months. Additionally, he helps a little girl who regrets not saying goodbye to a friend before she grew ill. Through these encounters, the Boy gradually understands that his neighbors are dealing with their own secrets and struggles. The main story of Rakuen takes approximately eight hours to finish. Players can expect to spend around nine hours if they include extra content beyond the primary narrative. Completing all aspects of the game requires about ten hours of playtime. The title focuses on helping fellow patients find closure by walking a mile in their shoes.
