About
Scanner Sombre is a horror adventure game developed and published by Introversion Software, marking their sixth major release following titles like Prison Architect. The experience focuses on cave exploration within a single-player format, drawing inspiration from games such as Gone Home and Dear Esther. Players begin the journey after regaining consciousness in a damp chamber illuminated only by firelight. Upon stumbling to your feet, you find a LIDAR scanner on the floor that activates when triggered. Putting on the associated helmet allows you to adjust the beam-width before proceeding deeper into the darkness. The game offers a terrifying theme supported by visuals that highlight the stone walls flickering in the dim light. After taking a few initial steps, the surrounding darkness consumes the player as they venture further into the abyss. The entire main story length is approximately two hours, which is also the duration for both the main experience and any extra content. Even when attempting to complete every aspect of the game, the total completionist length remains at two hours. This concise runtime provides a focused exploration experience without extending beyond the stated playtime limits.

Scanner Sombre is a fascinating experiment that's beautiful, smart and a little too insubstantial.
