About
That Dragon, Cancer is an indie adventure title developed and published by Numinous Games, released on January 11, 2016. This single-player experience offers a narrative journey that retells Joel Green's four-year struggle against cancer through approximately two hours of gameplay. The story utilizes a mix of first-person and third-person perspectives alongside point-and-click interaction to guide the player forward. Audio elements drawn from home videos, spoken word poetry, and themes of faith, hope, despair, helplessness, and love form the core of this personal memoir. The game serves as a developer's love letter intended to memorialize Joel Green while honoring those represented by his story. Players are invited to walk along a path that reflects how life changed for the family during this difficult time. The experience is designed to be poetic and playful, allowing users to slow down and engage with deeply personal content. All available playthrough lengths, including main story, extras, and completionist modes, total two hours in duration.

An understandably personal work, That Dragon, Cancer's sentimental excesses place a minor dent in a powerful, brave game.

That Dragon, Cancer tells a valuable story despite its uneven delivery.

Although not every part of That Dragon, Cancer works, it's a crushingly intimate game that left me thankful for the people who are still in my life, and reflective on those who are not. I'm so grateful to the Greens for sharing their experience.
