About
The Magic Circle is an indie action-adventure and strategy simulation released on July 9, 2015 by Question. This single-player title places you as the protagonist within a first-person fantasy game stuck in development hell. You find yourself trapped inside this unfinished world where the designers have left you without powers initially. A mysterious disembodied voice guides you to seize development tools from these indecisive creators. The narrative unfolds through dark comedy as you encounter designers played by James Urbaniak, Ashly Burch, and Karen Dyer. These god-like figures are so indecisive that they provide no abilities for the player at the start. You must work with a voice provided by Stephen Russell to take control of the game's mechanics. The environment remains incomplete, turning every situation into a question you answer through your own methods. Your goal involves trapping the designers' creations and stealing their behaviors to re-mix them freely. This approach allows you to craft unique solutions for puzzles that do not rely on traditional single-answer formats. You explore and master this world-in-progress by swapping behaviors and body parts as needed. The main story takes approximately three hours to complete, while adding extras extends the experience to four hours. For those seeking a full completionist run, the game offers about nine hours of gameplay.

The Magic Circle Critic Reviews and Review Scores
EurogamerSimon Parkin
This is a game written for people who have worked in a particular kind of game development. It's hard to applaud the jokes when it's unclear where the lines between reality and exaggeration lie - and this is a story whose shoots grow from lived experience. Far easier to applaud the game's core gameplay invention, which enlivens The Magic Circle at its heart, and a piece of design that, unlike Ishmael Gilder, will surely find a life beyond its game.

Visually drab and a bit too taken with its own story, but otherwise a clever and fun exercise in creative problem-solving.

The Magic Circle is a marvelously creative, puzzling adventure that's very mad at you.
