Townscaper is a single-player experience. Players can build quaint island towns with curvy streets, small hamlets, soaring cathedrals, canal networks, or sky cities on stilts. Players build their town block by block using a color palette to choose from. The game's algorithm automatically transforms the placed blocks into houses, arches, stairways, bridges, and lush backyards based on their configuration. The main story in Townscaper can be completed in about one hour. Adding extras to the playthrough increases the playtime to around one hour.
